The Caretaker
By Lisa McCourt Hollar
Griselda grinned, trying not to allow her glee to get the
best of her. She hadn’t gotten away yet. The three babies she carried in a
basket wriggled around, threatening to topple out. Stopping for just a moment
to tuck them back in under the cover, she then headed out the door to the
garden.
“I’m just a nurse, caring for some sickly babies,” she
murmured, projecting an air of authority. No one tried to stop her as she slipped
out of the garden. No longer containing her joy, she cackled loudly. She would
be eating very well tonight.
